To follow up on our visit from Simon and Robert from SGI, Simon forwarded me the link for the CAS's magazine for students writing Casualty exams.
Future Fellows - December 2013
I've set this blog up to share news and events at the University of Regina's Actuarial Science Program. It will have info about the current ACSC instructors and course offerings at U of R, the education process under the Society of Actuaries and Canadian Institute of Actuaries, and also about our alumni.

SGI Visit to U of R
It's been a while since my last post, for which I offer my apologies.
This Wednesday there will be an info session by UofR alumni and FCAS
Simon Mellor and Robert Osicki.
Details as follows.
We will be having visitors from SGI this Wednesday November 27, 2013 at 3.30 pm in the math lounge CW 307.20 who will come out and give a brief overview of SGI, the type of work they do in the actuarial department and some advice on finding work.
They will give you some concrete examples from an employer perspective about the interesting challenges and opportunities that exist for SGI and the Property and Casualty industry as a whole.
You are all welcome and encouraged to attend, especially the third and Fourth year Actuarial Science students. More information is available on the website: http://www.uregina.ca/science/mathstat/events/2013/11/sgi-visit-27nov2013.html

How to Apply for CIA Exemption From the UAP
This year marked the first year of the CIA's UAP (University Accreditation Program) and we have the first group of U of R students eligible for exam exemptions under the program. We had 5 students eligible for a CIA exemption from exam FM and two students eligible for an exemption from MFE. These students need to apply to the CIA to receive official confirmation. The process is outlined below in information that I received from the CIA this week.
We would like to advise you that if any of your student wishes to apply for a UAP exemption for a course taken in the fall 2012 or winter 2013, they can do so by May 23, in order to be approved by the Eligibility & Education Council (EEC) at its meeting on May 30. The next deadline will be July 07 to be approved by the EEC at its next meeting on July 15.
You can also direct your students to our website at: http://www.cia-ica.ca/membership/uap. There is all the necessary information about the program, fees and application form.
The students need to complete the application form and mail it to my attention, along with the original transcript, and payment.
I hope this information is useful, please let me know if you need anything else.

Back at the Blogging - And Hat's Off to Our Interns
I've been hearing that the Prairie Actuary has been quiet of late, I blame chronic cases of end of term and real life. However, it's time to get the ball rolling again.
With the start of the Spring/Summer semester we have a new cohort of students beginning their internships. The 2013/4 interns and their placements are as follows
- At AON in Saskatoon Kabari Quaye
- At Cooperators Daniel Roberts and Carmen Underhill
- At SGI Alan Chad
- At WCB Sinae Warbanski
Good luck to all!

3.14159 day
Pi day is in just one week away and I hope that you will all be able to attend and will also encourage all of your students to come out!
This year we will be handing out pie in the Multipurpose room of the Riddell Centre from 1 until the pie runs out. There will be a debate between our own Ed Doolittle and Economics Jason Childs, starting at 1:59. There will also be lectures, a fun video and craft and perhaps even Pi-kus (a haiku poem about pi).
This event has been organized by MASS and I think this year will be (once again) a lot of fun.
