2012 At the Prairie Actuary

It's been a busy year, with some pretty major events over 2012.  Here are some highlights.

  1. The CIA approved the Accreditation Process and University of Regina is one of the 10 universities able to grant exemptions to exams FM, MLC, MFE and C.  The news came out in late 2011, but needed approval in June 2012 and the first courses affected were in the Fall 2012 semester.
  2. We offered a new ACSC course, which was initially offered as ACSC390AC in Winter 2012 and will be offered as ACSC316 starting in Winter 2013.
  3. We had a  good group of graduates in the June Convocation.  Top marks (literally) to Ha Lam a double academic award winner.
  4. A number of UofR grads received actuarial designations.
  5. I attended the Actuarial Research Conference in Winnipeg.
  6. We had a visit from Simon Curtis, president of the CIA, who gave a presentation to our students.
  7. On the same day we had the 2012 sort of annual meeting of the Saskatchewan Actuarial Club.
  8. The CAS announced that it would recognize the CIA's accreditation process.
  9. Student Chelsea Valois put her studies on hold to joint the Canadian Women's bobsled team and she remains undefeated in international events.
  10. I dropped in to visit actuarial students at AON, Cooperators and Great West Life.  I need to visit SGI in 2013!

The End (of Term) is Nigh

While the doom and gloom interpretations of the Mayan Calendar and distinctly dodgy, the end of the Fall2012 university term is on us.  I have my last set of marks posted to banner and it all done except for the celebrations/commiserations.

Next term I'll be teaching ACSC419 and ACSC316.  316 is a renamed course, that was taught last year as ACSC390AC.  It covers the material on SOA exam MFE (or CAS 3F if you rather) and is open to both 3rd and 4th year students.

Congrats to Chelsea

By far the best reason yet for a student to take a gap year from her BSc in Actuarial Science. Hat's off to Chelsea (she's second from the left without a kid on her lap)

Saskatchewan Actuaries' Club Meeting 2012

After a hiatus of several years, the Saskatchewan actuarial community met at the University Club for dinner on Tuesday September 25, 2012.  Gust of honour was Simon Curtis, President of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries as part of his cross Canada tour of actuarial communities.

There were over 50 registered for the dinner, including current U of R students alumni and faculty as well as members from the Cooperators, SGI, Greystone and GMS.  Simon gave a short presentation which looked at recent CIA activities and initiatives (copies of the slides are available to the right). The University Accreditation was a hot topic of discussion.  Photos from the reception and dinner are shown below.

What to Do After the Degree

Often the questions that I get from current and prospective students areabout jobs after school and relating these to the ActSci Degree.  Ratherthan have me try and tell them, it struck me that it would be useful to haveformer students talk about what their experience.

So I'm contacting a few alumni and asked them a few questions as follows:

  • When did you graduate?
  • What do you do now (job title, area of work, who you work with etc)?
  • Actuarial designations achieved (if any)?
  • How did your degree help you?
  • What else did you need to learn along the way?
  • What do you do outside of work?
  • How do you balance work, play and study?

First to the wire was Will Du, who works with Sun Life in Toronto.  Will graduated at the top of a very strong class and continued his successes in business.  I'll post responses from more students over the next month or so.

When did you graduate?
June 2009

What do you do now?
I am currently Associate Director, Individual Health Pricing, Sun Life
Financial.

As you can tell from my title, I am responsible for pricing individual
health products (also known as living benefit products), e.g. Critical
Illness Insurance, Long Term Care Insurance, etc... I find health pricing
is very interesting, because of the health product market is so young and
so dynamic, unlike some other matured insurance market, health product
still has a very fast rate of innovation on product design front. And the
same time, with the high level of innovation on product design, a high
creative pricing is required.

In addition to that, Pricing in general is a very exciting function of
actuaries.  Pricing actuaries together with product managers hold the
responsibility of managing the life cycle of a particular insurance
product, e.g. assess its profitability, competitiveness, sales volume,
distribution channels, and impact from new regulations, etc... So pricing
and product function acts like a manufacturing department of an auto
company, they design it, put it into production, monitor sales, gather
feedback, and re-design it, and goes on and on... At meanwhile, pricing
actuaries need to get involved in discussions of investment strategy since
it is liability driven, capital and risk management, so it has a pretty big
exposure internally. Externally, pricing actuaries will be responsibility
for negotiating reinsurance deals with external reinsurers and working with
reinsurers to develop new products.

Sun Life is one of the big three in Canadian insurance market. In many
industrial measures, Sun Life is the number ONE and it is acting as a
leader in the market. With such a large employer, I benefit from it in many
areas. One of the areas is its active actuarial rotation program. With a
bit over 3 years at Sun Life, I have rotated from Individual Valuation role
to Individual UL Pricing role, and now I am Individual Health Pricing. Some
of my co-workers even have the opportunity to rotate to Sun Life's foreign
offices, e.g. Hong Kong, Boston, Bermuda and many other joint ventures in
Asia. And a large company is more dynamic, which will give people more
growth opportunities.

Actuarial designations achieved?

FSA (Fellow of the Society of Actuaries)2010
CERA (Certified Enterprise Risk Analyst) 2011
Hint : Will needs to get his FCIA (Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries)

How did your degree help you?
I'm always very grateful to UofR for providing me the opportunity to get
into the actuarial field. Specifically it prepares me for the SOA exams and
equips me with the working experience through its excellent internship
program. I think it is these two items got me an full time offer after
graduation. Thinking back, I feel I was very lucky too. The Economy was not
great during 2008-2009, plus I was was international student, which means I
needed to apply for a work visa in order to work. UofR definitely made me an
employable actuary.

What else did you need to learn along the way?Lots, but in the first year or so, I was focusing on finishing up my exams
(therefore I could get my "exciting life" back from the SOA). After getting my FSA the
learning continues, not only the technical knowledge, but the
communication, interpersonal and leadership skills as well.  It is a profession with a life
time of learning.

What do you do outside of work?I play basketball, ping pong, Starcraft II.  I enjoy looking at various
cars - the newest addition to Subaru family, BRZ, it's a pretty awesome
car! (not sure if it has been arrived at SK, but people can test drive it
from Toronto dealership) BRZ is a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru,
it has a twin brother called Scion FRS or Toyota 86 in Japan... (I can go
on and on on this topic...)

How do you balance work, play and study?
First of all, I was not even trying to be balanced during my exam taking
period, i.e. it was pretty much work and library. In 2010, I got my FSA,
then everything automatically balanced. It comes naturally because I do
not need to go to library any more.  After that, it depends on how fast you
want to advance on your career path.

Upcoming Changes to SOA Preliminary Exams

During the 2012 ARC Stuart Klugman from the SOA outlined some upcoming changes to the preliminary exams.  The details have not been finalized but we can expect to see the following changes in 2013.

  • Exam P will remain unchanged
  • For Exams FM and MFE, the syllabi will be updated to include the 3rd edition of the McDonald text which is due out this fall.
  • For Exam MLC, the addition of written answer questions is being considered.  Conversion of MLC to CBT is being placed on hold until this decision has been made.
  • For Exam C, a fourth edition of the Loss Models text will be released shortly.  This edition will see the removal of much of the material not on the exam syllabus, and expanded material on simulation and mortality table construction.
Note that no changes will be made for the Fall 2012 exams.  Changes to FM, MFE and C could be made for the Spring 2013 sitting,  depending on the timing of new texts.  In addition, where there is a new text edition it is likely that there will be a transition sitting for which students can use either the old or new edition.  The change to have written answer questions on MLC will not be made until 2014 (if at all).

On the subject of MLC, there was a session with a lively discussion of the Spring 2012 exam which had an unusually low pass mark and an unusually low pass rate.   Stuart indicated that this exam was much harder than the exam committee had intended, and that the Fall exam results were expected to return to normal.  He indicated that there is often a learning curve for both the exam setters and the students when there is a major change in text book.  Stuart also confirmed that either of the two text books listed for MLC would give a student the background needed to pass the exam.

2012 Actuarial Research Conference - Winnipeg

I was in Winnipeg on August 1-4 for the Actuarial Research Conference.  It was a great programme that filled 2 1/2 days (the abstracts can be found at ARC Program).  Apart from the talks and presentations, highlights included:

  • Catching up with our U of R interns and alum at Great West Life (GWL).  Shelby Herman and Lauren Mazurkewitz have just started their 16 month internship in May of 2012 and they seem to be settling in well and having a great experience with GWL.  Kali Spencer is a 2010 U of R GRad and recent ASA/ACIA who has followed up a GWL internship with a full time job on graduation.
  • A dinner on Thursday night celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Actuarial Program at University of Manitoba (at U of R we still have 88 years to go).  This was linked to the conference and held at U of M, but there were a lot of local actuaries from Winnipeg, including Shelby and Lauren who went as part of the GWL contingent.
  • A dinner at the Manitoba Club featuring very good entertainment in the form of jazz croonings from Sam Broverman (head of the Actuarial program at U of T).  I particularly enjoyed his take on "Accentuate the Positive" with new lyrics to fit the CIA's accreditation policy.
  • Catching up an net working with academic actuaries from across the US and Canada.

Death of Evidence Rally

I should have posted this much earlier, but better late than never.  I'll be attending the Regina
Death of Evidence Rally to protest Mr. Harper's policy towards science research (you have no idea how much restraint I've shown in this sentence).  Of particular concern to actuaries are

  1. The cancellation of the mandatory long form census form, which invalidated the entire long form census.  This was nothing short of petty ideology aimed at satisfying a very small minority of right wing conservative faithful (check Stats Can's figures on how many complains have been received on the long form).  I am a member of no less than 3 groups who wrote to the Harper government decrying this move (the CIA, CAUT and the U of R).
  2. Budget cuts (more precisely a gutting) of Stats Canada.

Alumni Achievements

While I was at the CIA's annual meeting in Toronto June 21-22nd, I ran into several U of R ActSci Alumni, three of whom were hitting actuarial milestones.  Paul Gobeil (class of 2008) received his FCIA during the meeting.

In addition, Derek Beatch and Kali Spencer (both class of 2010) were not at the CIA meeting but were attending an Associate Professionalism Course held at the same hotel.  This means that they should both become ASAs and ACIAs shortly.

Congratulations to all three.

Recent Hires at AON Hewitt

We had a visit from AON Hewitt earlier this week, as Troy Milnthorp (Saskatoon) and Don Ireland (Calgary) are the actuaries for the University's pension plans.  AON Hewitt have recently hired 5 new actuarial staff, 4 of them U of R grads.  The Saskatoon office hired Steven Buchan, Nimco Moumin (both 2012 grads) and Tammy Johnson (a 2008 grad) while Kadan Kelly (another 2012 grad) has started in the Calgary office.  Congratulation to all four!

A Visit to the Cooperators

The U of R internship program gives students the opportunity for a 12-16 month work experience between their third and fourth year classes.  I am in the process of doing on site visits with the cohort of 5 interns who started their 16 month work terms in May 2011 and the one intern who started a 12 month work term in September 2011.  All five return for their last year of classes in September 2012.  I suspect that the cultural change from work place to class room (not to mention the loss of a pay check) will a shock to them.

I did an on site visit with two of our interns at the Cooperators yesterday, Chelsea Valois and Erin Dodd.  Chelsea and Erin are in the last semester of their 16 month work terms.  By all accounts they are having very positive experiences.  It was also nice to touch base with U of R grads working at the Cooperators.  Chelsea's supervisor is Thomas Wood who was one of the first U of R interns and a student in the very first ActSci class I taught (ACSC116 bass in the Fall 2002 term).

Next week I will visit two more interns at Cooperators, Colin Billet who is finishing a 16 month work term and Jing Lu who is finishing a 12 month work term.

The fifth intern is Emelita Tejeda who is on a 16 month term at the WCB.  She gets an on site visit from me every week, due to my role as internal actuary at the WCB!

SOA Exams At U of R and Poll

We had 5 candidates write exam P on the 15th and 4 write exam C on the 22nd.  No one signed up to write exam FM at the U of R, but I know of at least one person doing it via CBT in Saskatoon.

I've posted a poll on exam writing - do you prefer the old fashioned pen and paper or that new fangled computer based testing method?

What to Bring to an SOA Exam

I've just spent 20 minutes signing in a group of fresh candidates writing their first SOA exam.  Remember the following things for your exam.

DO bring

  1. Your letter of acknowledgement from the SOA (2 candidates appeared without these today).
  2. An SOA calculator (I had to supply two candidates with calculators because they brought the wrong one) - and know how it works!
  3. Photo ID; and
  4. Pencils and an eraser.
DONT

  1. Leave your cell phone on so that it rings during the exam;
  2. Bring food to the exam - drinks are ok as long as they don't "cause a disturbance" (I'm still figuring that one out);
  3. Use a pen; or
  4. Keep writing after time is called.

Good Luck to Our Interns

Belated good luck wishes to our third year students setting out on internship this summer.  The cohort of students setting out on 16 month internships is as follows.

  • Courtney Clifford at Sask. Workers Compensation
  • Shelby Herman at Great West Life
  • Lauren Mazurkewich also at Great West Life
  • Mwiti Njagi at Co-operators Life Insurance
  • Stephen Wallace at SGI

In the fall, Pornpyia Vikiset will be starting a 12 month internship at Co-operators Life Insurance.

I'm sure that all 5 students will do us proud.

How Will Accreditation Apply?

I've been getting a lot of questions on this, so lets look at the exact requirements.  Here's what students need.  Two quick reminders - there's no backdating of exemptions for courses taken before the Fall 2012 term, and you need the minimum mark in each course under each exam (an average won't do it).

EXAM FM/2
In order to get an Accreditation exemption for FM/2, a student has to achieve the following grades
ACSC116 80%
ACSC216 80%
That's two U of R courses, both with a mark of 80% or more.

EXAM MLC
In order to get an Accreditation exemption for
MLC
, a student has to achieve the following grades
ACSC216 75%
ACSC317 75%
ACSC456 75%
That's three U of R courses, all with a mark of 75% or more.

CAS EXAM 3L
In order to get an Accreditation exemption for
CAS 3L
, a student has to achieve the following grades
ACSC216 75%
ACSC317 75%
ACSC419 75%
ACSC456 75%
That's four U of R courses, all with a mark of 75% or more.

EXAM MFE/3F
In order to get an Accreditation exemption for
MFE/3F
, a student has to achieve the following grades
ACSC316 80%
This is a new course that was offered for the first time as ACSC390AC in Winter 2012 and will be offered each year as ACSC316 from now on.

EXAM C/4
In order to get an Accreditation exemption for C/4, a student has to achieve the following grades
ACSC318 80%
ACSC417 80%
ACSC419 80%
That's three U of R courses, all with a mark of 80% or more.

CIA Accreditation Process - How Will It Apply to You?

I've had questions from current and former students on eligibility.  The bad news is that there is no grandfathering of exam credits for any courses taken prior to Fall 2012.  The rationale is that the CIA can validate course content from Fall2012 onwards, but not for prior years.

  • If you are entering your second year of classes and plan to take ACSC116 in the Fall of 2012 (or later), you can potentially get CIA exemptions for SOA exams FM, MLC, MFE and C.
  • If you've taken ACSC116  but no higher level ACSC courses, you can potentially get CIA exemptions for exams MLC, MFE and C.  You can't get an exemption for FM without retaking ACSC116 (which would delay your graduation by a full year).
  • If you've taken ACSC116 and ACSC216 but no higher level ACSC courses, you can potentially get CIA exemptions for exams MLC, MFE and C.  In this case, you can't retake 116 once you've passed 216.
  • If you have completed ACSC217 but no third year courses, you can potentially get CIA exemptions for exams MFE and C.  You won't be able to get credit for MLC or FM.
  • If you have completed ACSC318, you can potentially get CIA exemptions for exams MFE.  You won't be able to get credit for C, MLC or FM.
  • If you are an ACSC graduate or will graduate prior to the Fall 2012 term, sorry you cannot get CIA credits for any courses.
Notice than in each case, CIA accreditation requires that you meet the minimum standard in each course mapped to the CIA exams (more on this in future posts).

Passer's Night Janaury 20th, 2012

Paul Gobeil at the Cooperators pased on the details of the Upcoming passer's night on Janaury 20th.

Hello again to all the actuaries and actuarial students! I have the honour
of planning this winter's Passers' Night, a celebration of exam success and
a social gathering for the actuarial community.

Here are the details:

Date:       Friday, January 20
Time:       5:00 PM - ???? (come straight from work!)
Location:   Sparky's Family Restaurant, 3926 Gordon Rd (they have great
pizza)

This is the night every few months where we defy the actuary stereotypes
and party like it's the end of the world. (Maybe it is?) The way the event
works is that we contribute different amounts depending on which exam we
passed, and the money goes into a tab that everyone orders from. The fees
are designed to even out the motivation to party: the passers have their
exam results to celebrate, and the non-passers are getting a good deal.

For actuarial students who didn't pass, the fee is $25 (only if you
attend). FSAs don't pay anything. We're on the honour system here, but if
you passed, please pay your fee regardless of whether you are attending.
You are welcome to bring your significant other, and their fee is also $25.
Fees can be paid to me in advance or at the event.

Here is the fee schedule:

Please RSVP (to Paul) so I have an estimate of the budget and head count, and tell me
which exam you passed, if applicable.

First Day of Classes

Classes are back in session as of the 5th.  This term I'm teaching first year calculus (MATH103) and a brand new course ACSC390AC.  The 390 class will cover the material for MFE, and will become a permanent course offering ACSC316 in 2013.
